Are .EU Domains Interesting Enough to Buy

On the 7th of April the landrush period starts to buy domains with extension .eu

Up till the 7th companies and institutions that can prove they have a trademark or tradename for a certain keyword have the chance to register.

After that any resident of the EU (this is how I understand it) can buy the still available domains.

I am curious and like to know the opinion from the people on DP on this new domain extension.

Do you think it is worth to invest in .eu extensions?

Do you think SE's will use this .eu extension to localize on a regional level?

Is there any value in buying these domains and target the US/international market?

I personally think it could be interesting to get some good keyword domains.

    Looking forward to your thoughts.

Sorry Henny, you would also need to supply proof your a resident of the eu community towards a official registrar.

Argh, that is sad. I have a feeling the .eu's will be super domains, just below .coms on the foodchain.

I doubt it. I don't think it will be anymore popular than the .us extension, or the .ca extension. -.-

the opinions. ranging till now from being similar to the .us extension to becoming the best next to .com domains.

You indeed have to be a natural person resident within the European Community and be able to proof it.

Proof has to be submitted by filling in a form that has been send to your address. As far as I know there is no additional nationality check.

More info on The European Registry of Internet Domain Names see here

I don't know what future policies are regarding the transfer of domains although for the coming time I can imagine a european residency is likely to be required.

Long term I can imagine it will be more open to non-eu residents after everyone (european companies, residents etc) has had a chance to secure their domain.

    More opinions are very welcome.
