I'm interested in others thoughts on whether .edu and .gov backlinks are really better than regular .com links. And further, are .edu and .gov backlinks better than a high authority .com website? And what if the .edu or .gov website does not have related content to what you are looking to rank for?
These extensions are not available to anyone so that people assume that they are "better", but it isn't true. Yes, most .edu and .gov websites carry a lot of authority, but that is not a result of their extension. You could however look at this from a psychological perspective and conclude that, since people think that these extensions carry more weight, those websites gain links more easily and, as a result, they rank better. Ironically, the advantage of these two extensions is not the fact that search engines value them more (which they don't), it's the fact that people think that they do. Alan Johnson

There is no simple answer. But most edu or gov links that you can buy are not very valuable. The bottom line is the search engines want to see links from real authority domains, whether they are edu, gov, com, net or org does not matter. Great post on this here: www.searchenginejournal.com/truth-about-edu-domains-registration-links-and-google-juice/6095/
Matt Cutts answers this in a video here http://www.authoritydirectory.com/articles/Lightning-Round-Video-with-Matt-Cutts-62.html There is no real difference other than edu links are typically older and with more links to them... Anyway watch the video.
