Directory submissions work if you submit to topical/niche directories with high traffic.

Then you are enormously lucky. Myself and some webmasters I know, only get a few visits from directories.

Niche directories with high traffic are never free. I have always followed the rule not to pay a single penny for a directory inclusion.

The only benefit I see participating in directories is letting fellow webmasters know about your site thus receiving more reciprocal link requests or even one-way links if your site is worthy. And in the long term, directories still give a decent weight of backlinks (even those directories with a low PR but only in the long term)!

So, if I am to express my own opinion, I will still be submitting to hand-picked free niche directories.

You can look at submitting to large amount of directories like scattering seeds in a field, if one of the seeds produces results the effort is worth it.

Just an analogy I thought of.

Yes, the free directories are worth less. I've noticed a marked decrease in totally free directories in the past month or so. Most ask at least for a reciprocal. But that link exchange thing has been devalued too. Posting on quality high PR, both general and niche as a one-way link is the way to go.

True but up to a point. You have to SELECTIVELY sow your seeds.

I was always taught that if you scatter enough some will take, selectivley or not but of course I do agree with your comment. :)
