Are directory submissions dead?

I was wondering if directory submissions still hold some value.

    Are they worth doing?

Any suggestions of good directories to submit to?

    Thank you.

download the directory submitter, it will show the pr for each directory and you only have to fill out your info once.

I just do a few niche related ones only. But I find RSS feed directories are loved by the big G at the moment, as well web 2.0 directories.

There are a lot of good directories out there, but they're often hard to find because of the thousands of poor directories. Spend your time looking for directories that get some traffic or are in your niche. You can also take a few minutes and pound through one of the free directories list out there. Just do a few and you'll start seeing links showing up in your back link profile (that might give you a hint as to which general directories are worth it).

Yeah, these kinds of directories are good, but the regular kind are not looked at as good as they used to be by Google.

You need to find directories with a bit of quality. The best ones would be themed directories, ie. a travel directory to help a travel site.

Look for recent caching dates of the directory in Google, see if recent additions to the directory has been indexed by Google. Avoid directories that look spammy, or have links to dodgy sites (gambling, adult, pharmacies).

Then submit with a unique anchor text and description to each directory.

I think it depends on your niche and the type and quality of the directory that you are submitting to. I have had some great success with submitting to directories, especially niche directories as was suggested with the Travel Niche.

you get what you pay for, submiting to free directorys is ok if the keywords are not competative but finance you need the big guns, Business.com, yahoo, etc
