I would echo what has already been said - stick with highly ranked directories that have been around for a while and ensure the links they are using are not "nofollow". There doesnt seem much point to me in submitting to every dircetory out there I like to aim to submit to around 50 fairly slowly and suring that time build up back links in other ways.

I wouldn't submit my site to just any web directory, the higher the PR on the site the better. Unless you can get indexed on DMOZ, I wouldn't bother with directories. The reason you own a site in the first place is to get traffice. Ask yourself how many times have you looked in a web directory to find what you are looking for. Granted it's super easy to submit your site, but you're wasting your time for the most part.

There are many ways to approach building quality links, and quality is the key here. Article directories, QA sites like Yahoo Answers (be careful not to spam), social networking, forum and blog posts to name a few.

Directory submission works, it gives you powerful backlinks for established sites. I personally submitted one site to few hundred or so directories and it rocketted to PR2 within weeks.

yes it is very old technique. this process is little bit slow because we need approval from owner for that side. there is also sites
are available where there is no need for approval

Yes. Though it may be a slow process for quality directories that go through approval, it is best for your site in a long term. I always like to do this for a long term since business is meant to stay for years.

adding to what has been said, i would check to see if the Category page that your site is going to be on is already indexed or cached with google. if not, it may or may not be a good idea to submit to that category or directory - and if you do, be sure once your page is listed to go to google add url page and submit the category page and the Detail page as well.

i tend to assume that higher pr directories that good editorial policies meaning little or no spam, will be around for a while too. lots of the free directories don't make it, but that's a big generalization. overall age of domain is an important factor for the search engines so submitting to mature older directories is often a good strategy or at least a consideratin as well.....
