I guess some particular ones are, but for the most part no. There are still quite a few actively updated and regularly utilized directories out there. We still accept and still get quite a few submissions daily. If anything I would say from our perspective; Alive and Well!

but if you site directory slapped by google it's mean die.

look on http://www.smsweb.org/ (i didn't see any index on google (i assume they already die))
i think they already slapped by google. so we can assume they already die.

No, never if web directory link is relevant and web pages are high Page Rank then it provides long term stable and quality back link for website.

Directories are definitely not dead. On the other hand, t does appear that there are a lot less bad directories being created today, which is a good thing.

Agreed! And that in and of itself is helping solidify the validity of the good directories.

Real directories aren't dead. In fact, last PR update saw a boost across the board of the stronger end.

If you have a bunch of "directories" and you aren't interested in being part of the industry, sell them.

It doesn't kill a site, but a google slap lets you know how serious the owner really is. Aviva got slapped in 2007 (as did many others) and it is considered one of the strongest directories these days as a result. 5 years on it still exists due to a lot of work put in by the owner to remedy mistakes (what good business doesn't make mistakes or take risks?)

But most of the directories that get slapped, die, because the owner gives up. It means they were only in it for the short haul...

Absolutely true. They are off on a new fad which is good.

Very much so. I'm actually in the process (I've been knee deep in it since the middle of the year) of some major research regarding the good end of the directory spectrum. Hoping to really push them out into the open a bit more.

There's a lot of good directories that don't get a lot of kudos and a lot of good niches being ignored too.

Hi dude i accede with other guys here. It is not right to say all but few are died as you said firstly. But basically directories are not like rabbits they are turtles. You'll get good results, after two or three months. It was my experience with one of my sites. I got nothing for two and half months from beginning of my work, it has come to the third page directly from 39 because of the toiling work regarding with link building (got quality links from directories also):):):)

No directories aren't dead. People are still looking for Directories.
That is the main source of getting back-link.
