Are directory links worth the effort?
Does Google give weightage to those links also?
am wondering because there will be thousands of links in the directories ..
So, how imp is to submit to the directories?
    Thank you!

Honestly in today's tight competition directory listings will not contribute on your campaign and if you think thousand of them will do for backlinks purposes or rankings, its useless you will only trigger the red flag from Google.

It doesn't really carry any weight anymore. Concentrate on putting content on your site. Over time google will notice.

If you search about "200 factors of Google ranking" and "200 factors of Google algorithm" or "ranking factors of bing" or "ranking factors of yandex" all do have link back require, but Google has problem of having links from anywhere and everywhere.

Example: new domain or directory charge less to advertise so some people were advertising (buying link) from those sites, such as if someone of bank website than they should not have link from escort site, apparel niche directory.. etc. If bank site gets link back from "bank" or "finance" category than it would be wonderful.

If anyone think that directories are link farm than who would link for you? (please, try asking someone without paying money if they would. They will think or ask you why would i? even DMOZ does do it for free either) only social media, but wait (Save this thread), because you will see social media link would be count useless. Because, people do whatever Matt Cutt said in video, but learning how search engine works from back end.

Any directory, over 10 years are worth to advertise and that domain was directory for 10 years. (don't invest if there is directory with PR7, but if you look in wayback history than domain own by doctor 2 years ago).

You know, its all relative. I've often asked people who advertise on Bill Boards if it is "worth the effort". What I find out is that its NOT the only thing they do with regards to their overall marketing strategy. They typically have print ads, perhaps radio, tv and other media outlets. The internet, direct mail - you name it. There's no telling which one piece of advertising is getting the most traction. There's also no telling which one is not performing.

The overall exposure. The multiple outlets in use. The collective and combined use of several advertising platforms appears to work better when there are additional vehicles with which to propel ones product and or service.

The same is true of an online marketing strategy. To discount directory listing or any other method by which someone generates traffic, leads, and sales is pretty naive. Like the Bill Board, a lot more people see you long before they feel compelled to buy a product or service from you. That exposure introduces you and reinforces and multiplies your overall exposure.

Its just one small part of a much larger picture.

@Mia - You are right, because people who says "That directories are not good" it look uneducated, because people 15 years ago used think that having website is enough. Now, they will get people all over the world and buy their product, because they have website. NO..(BIG NO). Same way having good enough content is not enough, just think there are 20 billion site owner even 1000 or 100 site owner has best content from those 20 billion site. Good content is not enough, because 100 site = 10 pages on Google and no-one goes to 4th or 5th page in search result.

    Now, here 200 factors applies.
    1) Need good quality link [just think, no-one is site owner's uncle or aunt that would give that favor to link your site].
    2) Newspapers article (never free), quality article directory(free and useless), website directory (paid directories are better than free with years of age), Wikipedia( you need to be popular to become popular), volunteer link back(no-one is friend or few friends are useless), social bookmarking (free are full of spam), social media (you need to constant posting, who got time for that),..etc
Now, most easy way to get link back is quality paid directory, because spammer or cheap site owner would not spend money to advertise so that directory make quality website directory. Also, social bookmarking and article directory can kill your rank and DA, because the most of them are free so careful.
    3) You need video advertising

There are many factors need to do research and need to advertise everywhere without spam, but website directories (please read #2) are easiest way to have link back.

Not that important even getting into dmoz is nowhere near as valuable as it used to be. That said, I would still submit to local/niche directories, but general web directories just for SEO? Meh, waste of time for the most part. Worse still, spammy links can hurt your site.

These days your content marketing strategy and the quality of your backlinks are more important issues you should be concerning yourself with. Back in the day it was just about throwing enough shit at the fan because eventually some of it will stick but it doesn't work like that anymore. When it comes to determining the quality of a backlink, think of it like this, the easier it is to get the link, the less it is likely going to help you.

One link from a topical quality blog is worth thousands of junk directory links. Why is it that you would waste your time with directories? Is it because the price is right (free) and most accept pure garbage?
