Are Directories Worth Anything Anymore?

The backlink checker I use, the one by We Build Webpages, doesn't even show most of the directories I submitted my site too when I do check on it. I'm sorry if this is old news, but what confuses me... is that directories are still very popular and everyone still submits to them. Well then, if google isn't giving any value from it, how can they? Here are some directories that I paid money for: site-sift, uncoverthenet, directorychick (plus the network it's in). There were a few others I paid for too. Seems like money out the window now. Can someone please explain this to me?

Directories are very much alive and kicking as the quality directory sector becomes more and more established and mature :)

The tool does not depend upon data from other sources,It has it's own indexer

Only few directories has been indexed, (you can see it here www.bigoole.com/indexed.php)

I am collecting more directories (Free and Paid ) so it could index more.

you can submit your directories here to get indexed (www.bigoole.com/webdirectories/index.php)

When did you submit? It can take weeks to months for some backlinks to register. Unfortunately, patience is my only other answer...They will show up eventually.:)

Freewebspace - That is a good tool. Do you have a list of the directories which you search? How often is the link data updated?

It depends on what "value" you are looking for. PR was a good idea. It could have been useful but it got bent all out of shape and Google is now taking steps to see that it cant be used and abused. However if its serp's you are interested in start submitting to the free lists. If the directory is indexed, irrespective of whether its in the supplemental index or not the link gets counted. I work with them daily and it takes about two weeks after submitting my sites for them to start showing some movement. Forget about so called back link checkers, they all tell a different story. Rather watch your progress in the search engines themselves.

The only value you should be paying for, on any directory, is the value a dedicated directory master adds to a site and thats a tough call right now. There is going to be attrition in this market after Googles latest moves and no one knows for sure who is coming and who is going.

    To search your backlinks

    you have to check here

    http://www.bigoole.com/index.php

and to submit your site to get indexed

    you should submit here

    http://www.bigoole.com/webdirectories/index.php

I will sort it by PR,but as of now only few directories has been indexed,So I am going to release the tool when I index about 5000 directories as then only the tool would have real value.

Note:The tool indexes directories just like any other search engine and it does not depends upon the data from other resources...like (Yahoo,Google...)

After indexing more directories ,I will announce it here.

Later I plan to release a ranking system for directories which will be based on listings and value of a directory.

How long did you made the submissions ?
If its recent, wait for the Search engines to Cache the page.

Also, if you have submitted the site before Google backlinks update, wait for it.
Good updates backlinks every 3-4 months.

I dont see any results from your tool freewebspace ??
