Are directories dead?

I have a soccer directory (in my sig) ... it is up and running for almost a year and not even one link was submitted to it..

Are directories already dead? Is anyone still doing them?

No they are not dead. They are not as profitable as before because of the fear people have of Google giving them a penalty for paid links.

What have you done to promote it? Have you offered free links in the directory forum here?

Once you have some good links, people will want to add some of their own.

It also seems a weird niche for a directory. You may have to canvas forums and such related to soccer.

You need to promote it in forums and other places. You can even submit it to other directories so it is listed thier also.

Yeap promotion, promotion and constant promotion is the key. Also as soccer is more of a niche you need to spend extra time in the soccer forums, maybe displaying your directory in your sig. Niche directories are harder to promote, but if successful can be much more valuable than general directory.

I think you should make open for all sports rather than for limited to soccer only and try to promote through maximum sport forums.

it's a hard niche for a directory, but if you promote it well, you can get visits and submissions.

Maybe you just didn't promote it properly? Try the directory section on dp. Besides, there might not be much scope in the soccer section.

If they were dead, people wouldn't launch them. You see around 100 directories launched every day, however I have admit that some directories lack quality.

Why do people say soccer niche is not good niche when soccer is most popular sport in world (except US... maybe including US after Beckhamania ? lol )
IMHO, soccer is a nice niche
Your dir is quite empty so you have to fill it up
    You can
    1) offer free links to others on this forum
    2) add links yourself to top sites like soccernet , etc
    3) add rss with soccer news, scores on front page, add some articles
    4) would be good to add some photos
    5) submit to other dir, manual dir submissions, article submissions, press releases
    6) join soccer forums and put your url in signatures and promote

    Good luck!:D

No they are not dead, it's just most probably because you don't have much of a clue on how to make a website get traffic and look good. If you have no links on your directory, then why would others want to submit links to a dead directory. Maybe a better solution is to go looking for links yourself. It's also better to have a website with a directory attached rather than just having a directory on it's own.

    Directorys aren't dead that 1000% sure ....

Try posting your directory in webdir list (niche)
    Olso anounce it on DP
    Try soccer forums ...

You can make a lot of money, truely, but you need to promote it like hell. No promotion = No visit = No interest to advertise = No money.

I would consider only high PR directories, even never mind paying them if I get backlink from PR 5+ directories.
