    Hey guys,

Just wondering, does anyone think that directories can still be used to make a good amount of money online, and if so, how long do you think this will last?

Is free or paid the way to go?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this :)

    Will

Well anything can really, its not down to what it is but how its handled.

If you want to make good money from it then paid is your only choice. :)

How long will what last? Do you you mean if you start one?

    Thanks for that.

By how long will it last, I mean how long will the market for directories last, because theres already talk of Google devaluing how important they are for SERPs/PR.

May be, but these do not pay a lot, specially link building

The better directories on the web will always be recognised and welcomed. The crap and junk around will be dismissed, which is good IMO.

Its often misunderstood, its normal for something to lose value as other things evolve.

They just want less of the junk ones thats all, and directories still have pr regardless of what shows.

Directories or anything else helping serps can only help so much, competition will define if they make a difference to your serps after using them.

As will how someone used them.

Its best not to go into something if you are worried about how they will be treated now or in the future.

Directories can become vital source of income, but for that your directory must have some PR and nice amount of traffic.

Yes definitely. PhpLD, my designer, my coder, my host, Google, and Paypal have all made good money from my directory ;)

That may be the case, but have you made good money from your directory? ;)

Some very interesting comments up there, especially about how the web evolves and it is important not to go into something if there is a doubt that it may not have a solid future. Thanks :)

Just like anything, when done well it can be successful. Though successful does not always mean making big $$$. If you are wanting to make money there are probably easier ways to do it.

Btw, im not in any way trying to put you off :) you could create a belter of a directory.

In reality i haven't got a clue what the future holds for directories, but the same goes for blogs, social bookmarking and anything really.

Never know till you try. :)

Everything new that i do i have minor niggling doubts with, but thats normal, its just fear of the unknown.

I have owned/have a few directories, some with nice PR/Traffic which get a few paid features link monthly, enough to pay the hosting bill & put a little in my pocket...in which i'm happy with :p Since there not my main source of imcome online [Actually it's hobby].

If they are successful , then they would be a good income source. Also you can keep adsense
One of my directory makes more than $200/monthly through adsense
