Are dead links on blog posts bad for SEO?

I've taken the advice of the forum and been updating my blog. I've been writing about news articles relevant to the site and adding the URL of the original story as my writings are just a very short precis and the visitor may want to read more.

What concerns me is that in the case of news items, in a very short time the original link is likely to die. I do try and link to stories on the BBC website, or other news services that will keep the story in the archive for a decent lenght of time. My question is do old/dead links on a blog adversely affect SEO? It's not that easy to check they are still active, and I don't want to have to remove stories from my blog archive becase a link to the original has expired.

What do others do about this?

Take them off. Maybe put an auto feed on your blog to keep the items fresh. Or at least just link to a less dynami page of the source.
