Are blog comments still an acceptable marketing technique?

I've been kind of slaving away submitting to directories as well as responding on other blogs with blog comments. I place the keywords I am trying to rank for as the name of the blog comment and then I write an related reply in hopes that the comment will be well enough that they approve it and it will count as a backlink as well as increase my sites exposure by marketing to everyone on that blog.

is this still a good way to market/build links or has it been outdated and there is something better?

I'd say it's still a valid way of getting traffic as well as back links. You say you write comments that will hopefully be approved; I take that as that you write sincere comments. These days it's fairly easy to spot a spammer from a legitimate commenter - the one gets nothing but contempt (and definitely no back links), whilst the other GETS VALUE for PROVIDING VALUE.

Yes, it is still one of the easiest way to earn a backlink especially if the site is highly visited by google bots with high PR and it's a dofollow. Apart from that, another good way to use submission to article directories.

Blog comment is still a good technique to get backlinks. However, I would not rely too much by put any preferred anchor text as a commenter name. It could increase more chance to be rejected since blog owners found many abused by webmasters just solely for SEO purpose.

Blog commenting is nice way to oncrease traffic, rank & PR of website but it is not easy task by putting anchor text in Name section because maximum blog owners rejects these comments.

They can be, but stick away from blogs that carry numerous "Thanks for this" type posts over and over again with a backlink in them.

If you can find a blog in your niche and you can leave a suitable topic, preferably with an opinion, then they can be a goldmine. Its worth spending an extra minute or two create a decent comment rather than the token spam ones as mentioned above. Check for replies to your comment too, and get a conversation going, if you add value to someones site with your comments they really wont mind a link being left.

It is acceptable as long as the comments are relevant.

Something I have definitely noticed is that with the keywords in the "Name" field, it's pretty hard to get approved. Is there an alternative to doing this that can still gain you a backlink?

I think it's definitely a valid marketing technique. You're building backlinks as well as getting traffic from that blog...as long as you post quality, relevant comments.

As long as your comments are good quality, then it is an effective and legitimate link-building method. If it were not, blog admins would remove the URL filed in the comment form.

Yes, it is still a good way to build links by doing blog commentings. Not only for backlinks but also to drive traffic.

If you post a good comment in a blog such that it appeals to the visitors of that site, then you gain advantage such that they will visit your site.

Of course, backlinks from blogs are a good way to increase traffic and if the blogs are dofollow, it will count for SERP, commenting in blogs are easy and very efficient.
But i heard it was not very good to submit on directories mostly if they ask for a reciproqual link.

Surely blog commenting still works, all you need is find some dofollow blogs in your industry and leave useful comments on them with a link back to your website

I still prefer blog commenting to article submission. It's a way to get some traffic and comments for both my dofollow blogs as well.
