Are banners dead?

They used to be more effective. Do people still click those things or have text links become more effective? Banners V.S. Links basicly.
I am interested in the click through rate, not SEO.

They have gone down due to flash and them being too showey. Banners still work. ... Of course they do. ... You just have to tone it down.

I still click on banners, I'm sure alot of people do also. With any ad, graphic or text, I believe keeping it new and fresh is the key.

If users keep seeing the same ad they have already clicked on, they will most likely not click on it again.

Attractive banners still work. Dull and colorless banners fail.

How about PPC campaigns. Do banners attract more customers than text listings. I know this is general but has anyone done testing in regards to this?

I always find banners more effective then text links, of course I purchase bulk CPM banners from a huge source and get to pick and choose what I want. It really depends on the targets, and how new/fresh your stuff is.

I like to use banners for certain companies of mine because such as Adsense I am getting same CPC as text links but can throw my logo up which helps with the whole branding and logo awareness so I feel like it helps in the long run because people see it and might check out the site later which doesn't cost you a penny

The actual banner itself plays a huge part in the success of your ad campaign. I myself have tested a variety of banners and its amazing how some of them consistently outperform others by far. I have seen some of my banners get 10%+ CTR while others get <2% CTR.

    It really depends on:

    1) The target audience
    2) The intended audience
    3) The banner itself

A lot of it is common sense.... just think about those 3 factors when running an ad campaign and most importantly, TEST TEST TEST!

Personally i link text links better. But when i look at banners i usually only look at buttons or squares.

Text links definitely have a higher click thru rate.

Banners are good for creating brand awareness however so are probably worth the cost on igher traffic sites even though you might not get many clicks.

Banners just add to the general outlook to the website in my opnion these days. Effectively Placed Text Links would be much more efficient. However the trick with Banners could be to make it catchy and essentric to attract people to click them. Generally people put GiF Banners but Im personally against the idea.

I think text ads are better - for me personally, banners are part of the old world, and will soon be extinct.

Especially content related text links work best.

Have you seen a noticable dearth of banners lately? No.

    Why? Because they still work.

I predict a come back of banner sales now that Google has declared a war against text link ads.

I too used to believe text link ads are the future on the expense of banners, but Google seems to disagree.

Banner ads are not dead. I still seem to do better with image banner ads on a gaming / entertainment type site than I would do with a text link, but for other sites, it's normally the other way around.

I've always found that animated GIFs and Flash banner to be more effective, but then you always run the chance of pissing off the user. People prefer to read what is on the page without being distracted by all dancing, all flashing banners.

I totally agree Divisive Cottonwood. We actually ban all animated ads on our sites for that reason exactly.

I think even non-animated ads can be quite effective if their content is interesting and intriguing. And no this doesn't necessarily include many colors and whatever, that's old already.. get into the Web 2.0 gear.. flashy and rich ain't the game anymore. ;)

Pity many still don't get that though.

But yes, again, banner ads are far from dead, if done right.
