Are backlinks and external links the same?

    I am looking at my Google webmasters and have a bunch of external links, are these the same as backlinks?

    Yes, in Google Webmaster Tools external links = backlinks.

    The problem with webmaster tools is they do not show all the backlinks. It is a bit on the odd side!

    Yahoo does a good job at showing a large percentage of a site's backlinks. Just use the link:www.domain.com search command. Another good way is to use SEO Elite. It checks all the major search engines to find even more of your backlinks.

    Yahoo does show internal links and nofollow links as backlinks though.
