Does submitting articles to article directories really help increase site rankings? A lot of times an article may be placed on several hundred article directories with pages that may never get pagerank. I know that articles can help increase overall traffic, but are they even worth it for ranking?

It can definitely help. Make sure you change the article for each directory though.

Good ranking is based on linking. SEOed linking. And one of the components of this is age. If a link is obtained and then removed, then it has no value. A link must be permenent and article links are not.

Also, many of the article sites are moving to the "nofollow" link that makes them worthless.
