Are all links equal?

    Hi,

To further explain what I mean: Are forum links equal to other links. Lets say I can get my link in signature on my profile on page which is 2000 Alexa rank. Will this link (in forum in signature) count as much as any other from that page?

    no follow or not?

On a forum the engagement level for your sig link will be higher than at a lot of other places, especially if one as a good rep on the forum.
This can give it more weight to your site than a do follow that the SEs will look at that will not get a lot of engagement.
In SEs you are competing with other sites, in your sig link you should not be competing with anyone, unless you are silly that is.

If your rep is low it will get a lower engagement level.

Engagement is more what you after, actually getting people to your site. Using social nets, such as twitter having no follow links, one can still generate a lot of traffic without G or B stepping in at all.

This link, other than messing up the proper saying of 'The proof of the pudding in in the tasting.' has some good info.

As well as the moz site here, which is used on the domain/site sales here for valuation, so maybe it is right too.

Absolutely not. Generally, the harder it is to get a link, the more valuable it will be for your SEO efforts.

Links on websites like major news publications will help you a ton, while a link on a spammy blog won't help you at all, and could in fact harm your site if you get a lot of these low quality "spammy" backlinks.

Completely gree with dcristo. Every link has its weight, value I mean. It depends mostly on the place that link posted. Link from a popular trusted site is gonna help u really a lot, especially if it's in the high quality article. Also u ned to post your link at resource which has as much as possible similar topic as ur project does.

Yes, it is important that the site you get your link from is relevant to your business. Otherwise they will considered as bad links. Forums are good source to get back links.

The best links are always links that are not surrounded by spam. Nobody likes to see comments that are obviously just made to promote a website with little or no care for relevancy or uniqueness. If you make a short forum post, forum comment, or blog comment on a website that really makes people stop and think of how glad they are that they read that comment, it will likely pay off someday. You need to be creative and helpful when posting something or your website's reputation will not grow.

Pretty much all links are unequal. Their weight depends on the ranking of the page that contains the link. In addition, you need to check attributes of the link tag. For example, if they add rel="nofollow", the link will not provide any SEO value at all.
