Are Affiliates Worth The Trouble Any Longer?

I've got some very good traffic coming to some well seen websites I own, and can say that between LinkShare and Azoogle Ads, I'm getting nothing.
Clicks are made, but never converted.
When I put Adsense back onto these pages, the money flows once again.
Chitika is pretty much the same as the affiliates...very poor performance, if any at all.

My thinking is that perhaps these affiliate programs require more than just a plug-n-play attitude. Perhaps even actions bordering on black hat.
Lets face it- search engine and viral traffic alone doesn't cut it with these, unless you are at the top of the SERPS on every keyword that matters to you.

Feel free to argue the point, that's why I posted it.
I'd love to have some change my way of thinking on all of this, but in the meantime I'm losing money every time I remove adsense.

    Hello Claymation,
You'll often hear about targeted traffic and "valuable" traffic but you never quite understand the value of it until you start dabbling in affiliates. It's not like monetizing via AdSense where any sort of traffic will eventually find something they like due to the contextual nature of it.

If your site isn't directly or strongly related to the niche of the product/service you're selling, I would recommend you keep the AdSense.

However, if your site is vaguely related... I'd suggest you display the banners using the alternative ad script on AdSense and/OR display the affiliate banners a percentage of the time.

The number one key to affiliate marketing is targeted traffic. Sure, you can stick affiliate ads on any old site, but I'd like to liken that to throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks ;)

Hope this helps any thinking the same thoughts.

To sum it up... Affiliate marketing STILL works. In fact, a certain few DP'ers are pushing 500+ $12 leads per day in their specific niches...

Edit: You can also try some specific onsite affiliate ad networks like ShoeMoneyAds

If you are good, yes. I think affiliate revenue has the highest potential (by far) vs. other revenue sources. But you only make money when the advertiser makes money, so you need to be good.

Affiliates have been good to me since placing affiate links on my site. I think it really does depend on your traffic though. You have to be VERY targeted traffic to have affiliates work in your favor. Experiment and one day you might find one that works.

yes affiliate money can be really good if you know how to target your audience.. make sure you aren't jsut throwing up random ads... as even the affiliate companies will suggest you try ads and you should but if they don't convert pull them and try others untill you find ones that do convert. :) if you do it right you get realy EPC :) as with asense i was getting .05 to .10 per click with affiliates i get .30 to .40 per click :)

It also depends on how you promote these products on your site aswell. If you just sign up to an affiliate program and then us a banner to display the products information then this will not do that well.

It is best if you actually personally review the product and also include an image of the product and also maybe the price next to the product.
