Are 301 Redirects helpful in SERPs

My sites are listed by my provider without the www front end. In Google webmaster tools I have them listed with www, and most of the links to my site have the www.

Is a redirect from www to the plain domain name beneficial to SERP i.e. redirect from www.xxxx.com to xxxx.com . Should I have the webhost change the domain name to the name with the extension.

I'm doing alright in SERP right now, but want to maximize whatever I have. If I do complete a redirect, is there any chance of hurting my SERP?

    All comments appreciated! ;)
