Are 3 letter domains really worth the investment?

I can't believe people are paying up to $500 for a domain like D1L.com. If it were all letters it could be an acronym for a company's name. But when you throw in the numbers it pretty much doesn't mean anything. I know 3 letter domains are rarely available but I think they're overly rated. The reason why generic domains are worth a lot is because you can actually do something with them. What the heck are you supposed to do with a domain like D1L?

    Short domains have many purposes..

Proxies, Acronyms, Short URL services, Short EMAIL services

3 character/3letter .com domains haven't been available for quite some time.

3 and 4 character domains are hot with domain speculators right now. In my opinion, unless the three character domain is an acronym for a company (ie: IBM.com, AOL.com) they are worthless especially for SEO purposes. I'll stick with longer domains that have keywords in the name.

For any of you who have collected comic books, baseball cards or vinyl records, you know how the "speculator" market goes. Something new comes out in limited amounts (ie: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1) and the price rises because of demand. Unless you're playing the speculator market, don't worry about what's hot and stick with what works.

I own the domains xzib.com, yigz.com, and epcy.com which probably aren't worth any more than $20 a piece but are all letters and sound like something. If I owned the domains xz2.com, yi3.com and ep1.com I would have about $700 worth in domains. Ok???????

Dude! I think I offered before, but if you want to sell those at $20/piece, contact me and I'll pay now :p

As for the 3Cs, they're in short supply so they're wanted. I don't understand the craze either, but ah well :p

Its just like art. Once the artist is no more his works become more valuable. Similarly domains do appreciate with age and uniqueness.

Had some of them bought these domains for $50-60 a couple of years back they wouldn't have had to fight over it with $500-600 bids now.

Regarding the OP's query most of these 3 LLL/ccc domains are used for redirects. Very few have actually become websites. If you ever buy them do something useful with them. I still do not understand the 4 LLLL scenario though.

3L .coms/.nets/.orgs are very valuable and so are the 3N combinations of these 3 extensions.

I mentioned my 4 letter domains because they're only 1 letter longer and sound a lot better than some of these useless 3 letter domains.

I hope you did not take offense cause I meant I cannot understand the sudden increase in price/sale of llll.coms.

I do feel that letter number combinations are confusing.

I too would prefer LLLL to ccc.coms anyday.
