The symbol of nazis cynicism and cruelty, the "Arbeit macht frei" inscription from the main gate of german Auschwitz concentration camp was stolen.

If you don't know how it's look like, here's a picture: http://www.deathcamps.org/websites/...z Work makes free Arbeit macht frei Today.jpg

Police says, that it's an ordered theft.

What person (of group of people) could be so depraved to order it?

I hope they'll be catched soon.

Exactly my thought when I heard it.

But anyway, high five for the thieves.
I like daring multi million $ theft operations as long as the thieves don't take guns along ;).

The Auschwitz Camp management already placed a replica. For me its fine enough, as for my People Auschwitz is not a work of art and we don't care if not the original "masterpiece" is on display.

"high five for the thieves"? really?
You want to whoop it up with people who criminally and cynically seek to make money out of the deaths of millions of men, women, children, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and the mentally ill? No, it's not a work of art, it's a memorial and a testament to the evil that apparently civilised societies can fall into.

Profiting from a theft in the memorabilia market does not equate to profiting from the deaths of millions, IMO. Selling Nazi Tooth gold would be more in line with that. I do agree, though, that Auschwitz, and the cynicism in those words needs to exist as long as possible as a reminder. People forget very quickly what they are not reminded of, as American attitudes and 9-11 will tell you.

Poland today offered 115,000 Zlotys (~40,000 USD) in exchange for information that will lead to the thieves and/or stolen "nazi good".

    http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/Wiadomo...nformacje_o_tablicy__Arbeit_macht_frei__.html

Now that's insulting. I bet there are couple of private persons in the west who would have offered more for information that will lead to their lost pet.

Czesc Magda! Co słychać? Nie mówię po polsku .... ;)

Work will set us all free, it's just a sign not a religious symbol.

Contrary to popular belief that it is a religious or holy symbol:

Rumour has it that the sign was stolen by Palestinians to use on the worlds largest concentration camp.

I wonder if my employees would object if I hung that over the entrance to the office....

I doubt it, I suspect 'work will set us free' would be their motto because as soon as they have enough money they can stop working for abomination:D

Depends on their view of the sign. A symbol for hope or a symbol for false hope.

It was an ordered thief. The inscription was ordered by the insane nazi collectioner. He'd been arressted today morning.
There was a 25.000 euro reward for the information which might be helpful for the Police and someone have seen thiefs trying to hide the sign in the forrest.

A site like that must be preserved for many generations after we're all dust, just with grain of hope that it will stop the next one.

The problem is that today so many people deny the existence of nazi concentration camp.

I've heard a quote - as far as I remember it was said by Gunter Grass. It was something like this: The day when we (germans) forget or deny horrible history of our nation, it'll be the first day when the IV'th reich show up its fangs.
