Approaching new sites for advertising my link

I see a lot of sites in my field that are content sites, that do not have any advertisings (beyond adwords, and stuff). How do you approach them to buy advertising links on the site? I'm not sure if I ask nice enough, cuz no one ever writes me back. Think a lot of sites are just not interested?

I, for one, delete all the link requests I receive because I they are so poorly (or automatically) written. Also, I don't provide any links to any sites other than my sponsors. However, that's about to change, sort of. I just signed up with linkalizer.com and set up a link exchange offer on one of my sites I no longer use (but still has good PR for those obsessed with it). I now am able to offer non-reciprocating links for my sites through other websites I own/manage so I may have to start looking at the requests again. Most will be garbage, but some may indeed be worthwhile.

Visit my link exchange information to see if I have anything to offer you might be interested in.

I am really looking for home & garden links, to be honest. I'll deviate a little from there, if I have items that cover different areas. I really don't carry anything like those products listed, unfortunately.

One home & garden directory wanted $1000 for links on 5 pages LOL. I can get sitewide on osdir for less than that.

At my historical site (some 3500 pages) I have always deleted link requests, except the first one I received when the site was 6 month old and since then I have never asked for one. That was 4 years ago.

As you say that's about to change on my new sites too. However, the reason is that I need to build up traffic fast and linking might do the trick. Hopefully.

Is the aversion to link requests and reciprocal links that you two, mopacfan and johncr, possess standard among webmasters these days? If so, then how does one go about obtaining backlinks? Besides hitting all the directories and your own sites, what are the best strategies to amass backlinks?

I have found writing articles about your theme then distributing them around works well.

The reason I typically just ignore link requests is because they're clearly generated en masse, and usually so badly worded or spelt that it just plain annoys me.

The BIGGEST turn off for me is when idiots write me expecting ME to visit their sites to complete link registration.

Every now and again I like what I see - I can tell they've gone to great lengths, and aren't spamming it for granted, and I do reciprocate, but it's pretty rare nowadays. Funny thing is, I'm about to undertake a campaign of my own again soon for a new site. I'll revisit this thread again before I do just to refresh a little :)

PS: That article idea is a **good** one. It came my way the other day and i of course reciprocated (but I'd forgotten all about it). The WM was offering me more than just a link from an as yet unranked site, making it more barter than beg - so I reciprocated on principle.

    Cheers,

    JL

I have beensubmitting my articles to sites like searchwarp (excellent, and allows multiple embedded links) and article city. Many of the other ones are so darned slow at posting - or never post - that its a waste of time. The articles I have posted on those 2 sites, I have seen the associated pages on my sites rise significantly this past week. On one, I raised from #19 to #1 just this morning.
