Short domains do not mean everything. While short domains such as 3 letters and 4 are all sold out and there are countless people waiting to buy them up when they expire. What really sells a domain that is that short is the traffic that is going to it. For domains that get 50 unique visitors a day just by mistype or it being such a small domain and people trying to search for a company etc. They go for over $20,000. Traffic to an existing domain is key.
Short names as someone has mentioned do not mean everything and some can still be picked up cheaply,if you give a little thought to a domain name you can still come up with some very good ones a example the original www.diy.com went years ago and if you had a very very deep pocket i guess you could buy it i bought http://www.diyfrom.us for under $10 it is a shortish name but one that tells the customers what products or services the site is all about before they even click on to the site.One word i thing that comes to mind that was a Bargain of a lifetime.
