about 1.5 yrs ago when my site first launched I submitted it to DMOZ and it was never accepted or denied to my knowledge so a few weeks ago I submitted it again. does the editor just not like my site? will dmoz get mad i submitted a second time?
me either, but i hear some search engines *cough* google *cough* weigh a site heavier if it is listed. i see all sorts of bogus sites listed in DMOZ, but yet it seems my site just never gets accepted. I have also applied to be an editor a few times, this was me assuming that they must need help if they are not confirming or denying request in my category area (internet radio) but i never hear word.
I got 2 sites approved last year, really depends on the category, some editors work, others don't. Not a big thing, changed nothing on the SERP and no direct visitors, IMOH DMOZ is just over hyped.
I submitted pseffect.com and I think it can easily enter the directory but never saw it accepted so I know your feelings...
Ministrel....there you go again always trying to put DMOZ down. I realized what your saying is not necessarily true. Recently, one of my client's sites been accepted in dmoz. The number of new "clone" links generated from being inside the ODP allowed my clien'ts sites to come out of "supplemental hell" In one of Cutt's blog entries, it talks about supplemental results. One way to get out of them is to generate enough backlinks. DMOZ did that for my clients site, and thus allowed 50-100 extra pages to be out of the supplemental index and thus having more content to be on the SERP's. So being inside DMOZ did give an extra "value" to my client's site for Google. I'm not sure what dragons5 means when it gives a site more "weight" (if hes only strictly talking about PR, then you may or may not be true). If dragons5 means "weight" as in just value to a site, then the extra "value" I just described above is true. And of course, you don't need DMOZ to get out of supplemental hell, if your site is good enough and produces lots of natural links or if your rich enough to buy enough backlinks for your site, then that too can get you out of supplemental hell. But I have to admit, since DMOZ is free and provides lots of clone links, it is probably by far the easiest way to get your site out of the supplemental index. Cheers
i just dont understand why they wouldn't accept my site. it's relavent and constantly updated. just thought maybe the 'editor' of that area runs a similar site and therefore would rather decrease the chances of competition by not allowing more sites. or do i need to know someone?
I'm not putting DMOZ down in this case. I'm simply (once again) countering the myth that a DMOZ link has some special value. More superstitious thinking. Where did you see Matt Cutts or anyone else say that the only reason a page ends up in the supplemental index was absence of incoming links? Where did you see Cutts or anyone else say that was even the primary reason for supplemental listings? And where did Cutts or anyone else credible suggest that DMOZ clones produce quality backlinks? or links that are not discounted due to duplicate content filters? No. Sorry but you are simply wrong. Again, you seem to believe that so-called "supplemental hell" is all about incoming links. It isn't. You're also dead wrong about clone links. Cheers[/QUOTE]
Well the only explanation for my client's site to have an additional 100+ pages indexed recently and the already 200+ pages indexed (which were all in the supplemental index) that now recently became in the main index (not supplemental index) has to be because of DMOZ. Its been about 2-3 weeks since its been accepted, and afterwards my client did not receive any real quality backlinks (I didn't submit to dirs, didn't notice any real natural backlinks, did nothing basically). The only explanation for the this has to be because of the clone links generated from DMOZ. I tried digging it up in Cutts blog, but I'm pretty sure if you ask anyone whats the best way to get out of "supplemental hell" is to generate enough backlinks.
No it isn't. For the love of Pete, do you seriously think Google or any other search engine stands still while you add a DMOZ link? Do you seriously think that there weren't a hundred other things happening during that time? Have you ever heard of "everflux"? Just another bltanat example of supersitious thinking. I bet that somewhere in that time you had a sandwich and a glass of water too - do you think THAT might have boosted the number of pages indexed on your client's site as well? I suggest you go back to SEO 101 and look at the other reasons for supplemental listings...
Ask here: http://www.dmoz-resource-zone.com/forums/ Note that this is NOT the infamous Resource Zone. You'll actually get answers there.
back to off topic: I read a lot about why certain pages go into supplemental. Yes it can be true that Google recrawled my client's site and put it out of supplemental. But when it was in supplemental, I had all the basic preventions. Unique title, keywords, description, and content on all indexed pages. The only reason I was left to believe was that the site was fairly new and it was the first time google indexed it. It stayed like this for 2-3 months, and until recently it just got cleared out of supplemental. And there are a lot of resources out there telling webmasters to create quality backlinks (especially for new established sites) to build trust with Google so that it can get out of supplemental. Its either the trusted DMOZ link Google picked up and thus building this "trust" with my clients site so that it can index 100+ new pages and take out 200+ pages of supplemental index. If you really think its a coincidence, then thats fine with me. I still think the acceptance in DMOZ still had something to do with it.
Bingo. New site. Only partially spidered. Were you following this in Google sitemaps? But you still believe it's all due to DMOZ.
. ur so easy. @dragon i looked at your site that you posted on forums, i like it but hey if i like it does not mean its dmoz stuff, i like lots of stuff but they are not on dmoz yet. One day when i become editor i can have all the fun i want . PS: u didnt even thank skunky , he gets mad when people do not thanks him or offer him Blizzard treats.
