Apocalypto - thumbs up

In light of Gibson's recent drunken antics, I felt a bit guilty paying money to see this movie. However, this movie was awesome. Another gory, subtitled, dead language movie from Mel Gibson, Apocalypto was well conceived and well executed. Some parts were over the top, but hey, that's Hollywood. Anyone else see this movie? What did you think?

Not yet, but will. I don't care about drunk mel, like I don't care about weird cruise....got to separate the two, because they are definitely two great filmmakers.

I'm not sure if I want to see the movie. The Mayan people have complained that Gibson portrays them as being barbarians, when this is far from being the truth. The Mayans were the most advanced and refined civilization in the New World.

I too have a great respect for the ancient Mayan culture. But its probably true also that they did do some of the things portrayed in this movie. I am all about some 2012 convergence of the equinoxes and the Mayan calender along with their other great accomplishments in astronomy, but that doesn't mean they weren't on the verge of moral collapse much like the Romans before they fell.
