    Hello,

Let's say I want to make a tool for me only to check different things like ranking for a keyword or phrase. Usually for such a task people are using a Google API? Which one?
I can also use curl to make the search and parse the result. Is this a good approach? Can you please advice?

There's a new live stats program call BLVD Status. They've been around for a while in Beta, but they just launched a new version.
You can monitor keywords on all search engines, and it keeps track of the ups and downs. I use this for a network of sites I have.
I have nothing to do with this product, but I heavily recommend it.

I have been following this thread waiting for someone to make mention of an API that you could offer to clients on your site as a tool. Does anyone have access to anything like this?

I did check out the BLVD tool and it seems like a million other tools that are out there. I am sure it is fantastic, but I did not see an open source solution there.

I think Google Webmaster Tools gives you an idea of how well your site ranks for certain keywords.

If you are just looking for keyword ranking tracker than you should definetly check out SEO Rank Monitor (yes, I'm affiliated with it). Use discount coupon in my sig but there is a free 1 month trial so if you don't like it you won't lose any money.
