API to Check Domain Registration Status?

I've been looking around for an API I can use, hopefully for free (but I'm willing to pay if I have to), to check whether or not domains are registered using PHP...

So far I've considered eNom and a couple of others but haven't found anything for free. The thing is, I don't actually need to register the domains through the API, just check the status.

Any suggestions?
