I have just purchased a new server with a plan to install Windows XP and Apache, but when I come to run Apache it won't initialise. The server was not compatible with XP so I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition instead. When I look back at the XAMPP site I note 2003 is not listed as an appropriate operating system. Can anyone help me get the server up and running using apache? Or is there an alternative I can use? Paul
Do you have a specific requirement to run this on Windows? You'll probably get better support, as well as better security and performance if you run it on Linux.
I have 51 sites running on the server while I get it sorted out have another 50 odd to add to it when I'm sure its stable including a forum. I thought about Linux but am concerned that I don't know enough about it yet. How easy is it to set up and admin if I do go that way? Is there built in hosting functionality? Paul
Windows might be easier with GUI, but on Linux, if you have a control panel, it's very easy to control hosting account. If you are new in Linux, and still learning, you might want to try with a Linux vps. So, if you mess up your vps, you can reload it and try again without much trouble. Of course, you will need to backup your data frequently. With dedicated server, if reloading OS, you might need to pay a fee for datacenter staff doing that
I already have a VPS but am moving my sites to a server I purchased a couple of weeks ago. I'm planning to do a full mirror of the whole drive so that if there are any problems I can be back up and running within a few minutes. I've been getting a bit put off by the delays for technical support and my sites being off line. My earnings are minimal at the moment so I want to reduce costs, hosting myself seems to me to be a good way if I can managed to make it work. Paul
