    Hi guys,

I have just got a dedicated server - I had no choice due to the amount of traffic.

But my problem is that I am more of an SEO/web designer ... not really typical web admin / web developer...

So I am worried about my new baby server.

    My setup is:

    Centos 5 + cPanel

It is an out of the box set up, created by my hosting company (I guess from a ghost... it literally took them 20 mins to set up....)

Is there anything I should do to make my new server more secure?

Is there any advice you would give to a noob like me?

There are many things that you need to do, in my opinion, that would help with securing your server. Is the server fully managed? If so, you should be asking your hosting company what they are going to do to ensure your box is secure. If its not fully managed, you can do the sys admin work yourself, if you feel comfortable with it, or, hire a company that will look after it for you. I've got a few articles posted on my blog regarding some of the things you could do to help secure your server, as well as some optimization tips. Feel free to check them out:

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have "OS updates"... not sure if that is the same thing as it being fully managed?

I will definitely check out your site, thanks!
