I wonder if you have been paying closely watch with your Apache logs. If you do what particular logs should be closely watched by newbies ?
I have never pay attention to logs until I observer unusual site load, and sometime finding spammers behind such issues. I posted something about it long ago, have a look: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=137245
I do not pay that close attention until somthing goes wrong apache hangs or I want to look at stats so the 2 I am intrested in are /var/log/httpd/error_log and /var/log/httpd/access_log that is if you are using linux Thanks
Logs are very useful, for newbies too. You can analyze errors (missing links on page), popularity of documents, login tries to admintools, etc. Good idea is install webalizer to statistic analyze apache logs.
If you are in a linux system and have the root access, then you can try apache log tails, its really great. But most probably it is only for cpanel servers. http://www.labradordata.ca/home/33
