Lets not squabble eh... I have sites that have no bought links that have been affected so I dont think it is a link buying penalty.

I think time will give us the answer. If the rankings come back in the next few days then we can put it down to an error/change in the google algo. However, my view is that it sounds more like a penalty, the big question would be why?

Must be pretty hard seeing that amount of traffic disappear just like that. Hopefully things will get back to normall.

You may check your site and your competitor. :D You will see not only your site ranking down but your friend/competitor site which ranking just climbed up around 1 month ago has wiped out. This is uncommon to see many new sites ranking down altogether while many old sites ranking up. Site ranking is not down by penalized because it is almost not possible for many sites which has different owners and promotion method ranking down altogether. This downside is seems like a roll back. If you take a look you may found that ranking for many keywords is same as ranking around 2-4 weeks ago for many new sites which ranking not climbed up. However, when you check site ranking through SEOChat Multiple Datacenter Keyword Checker and you will see different results. Many sites got top 5 ranked in all DCs while not top 100 in Google.com (USA). If those sites has been penalized then it would be impossible for ranked in Google DC's directly. All search results in Google.com are exported from results in Google DC's reflection. It might be more accurate to see your site ranking through this method.

However, this is only my opinion while everyone can have their own angel. :D It's up to you.

In my case it's not a penalty, the site was somewhat an authority site and it didn't just lower in a few rankings.. A few hundred thousand rankings vanished completely out of the SERP's during a data push in a matter of minutes.

Dozens of other sites i have used the identical SEO and promotional techniques on have not been effected.

I have been informed Google is working on further merging the supplemental index (which still exists just not labeled) in to the main index, which is why there's some massive SERP swings. Some sites would obviously be effected more depending on things like Age, Supp to Main Index ratio, Backlinks and Deep Links etc.

One of mine has just been hit. Newish site, and not quite the quality of my others, was starting to rank but is very hard to find it now. Thanks for the feedback from Google sweetfunny, I'm not sure if I'm dealing with the same thing or some sort of delayed sandbox.

No, I owe you the apology. Sorry.
My site has a penalty and me and Sweet were ribbing each other about it a month ago.
Are we looking at two different phenomenomen then? Perphaps a few base algos have changed that are in turn affecting a tonne of others?

Thats the same thing that happened to me when we spoke a month ago mind.
I had a guy from a bluechip with me at the time and was boasting how well our site ranked........except it wasn't there.
What type of link profile do you have ratio wise?

same thing happened to two of my client's websites, this is completely unfair un frustrating, especially when you own a quality white hat site. the only thing that you do is continue building links and wait. that's what i did i got the rankings back after 3-4 months for one of those sites.. good luck.

For anyone that has posted here or has had this happen to them, have you seen any changes for the better or worse lately?

i'd suggest doing a search for duplicate content on www.copyscape.com
I got hit by the same thing on 2 sites and see there are scraper sites with my content.. i plan on changing the content on my site to see if my top 10 ranking returns or not...

ive had the same thing happen as a few other members have mentioned. my site is about 9 months old or so and was ranking consistently for my main keywords up until the latest PR update. two odd things then happened:

    1) my inner pages which I have done absolutely no SEO for gained PR, while my homepage which all of my SEO linkbuilding efforts went into (all legitimately) remained a PR0.
    2) my page dropped in the SERPs in a manner as if it had been penalized, but only for certain keywords. words that i was ranking top 5 for, i no longer rank in the top 200 for... all of my pages are still indexed, and i still rank in the SERPs for my domain name.

this is all very odd to me. if i had done anything blackhat or bought any links, i'd assume i was being penalized, but i know i have done nothing wrong. i hope all of this blows over soon.

Although that sucks (going from #4 to #10) I think what many are experiencing here is when a site has been on the first page of Google's Results for quit a while than ends up on like PAGE 9 or 13 or way way down there. ... Good news is that your site is just bouncing on the first page. Keep up the good Whitehat techniques and you can probably pull your site back up.
