Anyone with some suggestions on using press releases?

I've never done a press release blast, either in my SEO practices or as a business activity. I've thought of starting, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've heard of free press release sites, paid services, etc. What are the pitfalls and positives I can gain from doing press releases? Is it an effective process to add to my SEO activities?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions y'all might have. :)

From my own experience, I don't get lot of traffic from press release but I get more traffic in social bookmarking site.

I'd rather get reviewed by a tech blog, its 10 times better then a press release.

But they all count with the optimizing of your site and getting traffic.

I have had some good success with real press releases in the past, especially when you get it into Google and Yahoo news, you have to be willing to pay for distribution though

This is good especially if you have a well-written Press release.. This can dramatically increase your sales, expose your company to the masses, and greatly enhance the image of your business or products of your site..

If you're not getting good results from press releases, you're not using them right. Chances are that either:

    A) Your story just isn't newsworthy at all, or at least not newsworthy enough compared to other news at the time you released it (remember... it's always relative), or

    B) You're not distributing it effectively. If all you do it post it to free distribution sites or something like PRweb, don't be surprised if journalists aren't beating a path to your door. Targeted, manual distribution is always best.
