Anyone want to work at France Telecom?

Last week a 48 year old father of 3 hung himself in Brittany, France.
    Suicides happen, nothing new there.

In this case it was the 25th suicide since February 2008 of workers from France Telecom!! There have also been 14 attempted suicides in that time, including one guy who stabbed himself in a meeting because he was "fed up" after being told he was "good for nothing".

Seriously, I feel great about my job now.

That's Sad... that how people are committing suicide lets hope its not because of recession and if its due to stress or work targets then they should think about managing that...

    Suicide is not the solution...

    Where is this stated...?

I don't want to burst your bubble man but maybe France Telecom is just a large corporation -- I wonder how many people commit suicide that work in McDonalds, etc?

Tragic, though, that they'd be famous for this..

As I understand, the reason for these suicides is a change in job performance requirements. Previously France Telecom employees worked in teams and supported each other to achieve their collective goals. Now the team concept has been replaced by individual goals. Each employee has to make it or break it on his own in doing so may be competing against his/her former teammates . In other words, now working conditions at France Telecom are similar to those in the U.S and go against the French cultural grain. So apparently the workers, at least at that company, are not accustomed to that kind of pressure. Before retiring, these are the very conditions under which I worked for many years, as I'm sure many other DP members have likewise have done or are presently employed. So all I can say to the surviving FT employees is: WELCOME TO HELL.
