Hey guys, is this a wise thing to do, using one's own pc for hosting their own site? Two downsides I am thinking of is how to prevent against hacking and malware and how to prevent pc from crashing or what to do to prevent no down time, any ideas please?
This would not be a wise idea. If its just a hobby website and you don't care if it goes down, then you could do it. Here's just a small list of things that could go wrong: 1. Computer crash 2. Computer hardware failure 3. Power outages 4. Network outages 5. Network attacks (ddos/dos) 6. Easier to get hacked 7. Dynamic IP instead of a dedicated IP 8. Proper cooling for a computer running 24/7 9. Fire or flooding The list goes on...
It's not a wise decision, as you've to keep your machine ON all the time. Not sure what's the electricity prices are in your part of the world but still it'll cross the today's available cheap hosting options. When you can get the hosting under $5/mo nowadays, why handle this headache?
Check with your ISP as well. Many of them do not like this and have clauses that say you can not do this type of thing, unless you have a business account.
Using your own computer to host your own website is not a good idea. I've been doing this. There are many pros, but there are more cons. The worst thing about this is that you spend a lot of time and effort on administering the server, which at that time could be spent on the development of the project. Hosting is very cheap these days.
Hey guys, there is no need for anyone to reply to this thread anymore as I had decided not to do this but I appreciate everyone's advice and info, thanks!
Shared hosting: This is a very affordable option with good security features and reliable uptime. It's perfect for most personal websites and offers a user-friendly experience. Free trials: Many providers offer free trials so you can test their service before committing.
Why you would do that ? You need to run your computer non stop and a lot of electricity consumed plus it can crash and your site will also crash Just get a host for 5$ or 10$ and you get more cheap also
