I was thinking about approaching local businesses to advertise on my site. My site's audience is local.
Well, you will never know uunless you give it a go. How popular is you site? I would recommend going to businesses that can relate to your site.
I wish I had the mentality/personality of a salesperson then I'm sure I would have no problem doing it.
If your website has an audience from a particular region, then they might be interested. I would find it hard convining a busienss owner who only sells within their local area to pay for advertising with an audience from all over the country. Its worth a go though.
We sell advertising to local businesses for a community news site - www.wakulla.com. It's a different kind of sell because you have to educate the customers on the value of branding & lead generation via the web (at the end of the day it's all about leads). We've been marginally successful and have done several things that seem to help indirectly with sales: 1. My wife and I are active members (we participate) of the local chamber of commerce where we network with other small business owners. 2. Small yard signs in the road right of ways promoting the site. 3. We volunteer and teach small business web design classes for the local tourism & economic development council. 4. We send out quarterly post cards (snail mail) to all the businesses in our market. 5. Partner with other small media companies for ad swaps and promotions (radio, billboards, print). 6. We send out a weekly email newsletter highlighting what's happened in the previous week and what's coming up next. Basically if you're going to sell local you have to get involved and be known. Small business owners are barraged with advertising reps trying to separate them from their money and you need something to differentiate yourself from the last dozen sales guys that knocked on their door. -jay
