At first I did not pay much attention but now I'm curious about ad placements in Google Adsense.

    Is anyone actually using them?

    Thanks.

so what would be the best placement, do we blend the ads in with the design of the page or make them stick out ?

most people blend them because people avoid the advertising

Blend them and place them above the fold for the best CTR.

I think blending works well. I typically remove the border to help it along.

I don't blend as much as most, I set them to the side where they are clear that they are ads. Then, folks who click them know what they are getting into and only click if they are really looking for something. No proof yet, but I suspect this may translate to higher conversions on the advertiser side which keeps me "in-good" with them.

I really wish Google would let us see what the conversions for our sites are.

You have to optimize ad placements in order to increase CTR. The higher the CTR is, the more you will earn. I suggest you try different ad units and place them in different spots in your site and see which combination works the best.

Until a high enough percentage of those clicks fails to convert on the advertisers sight. Then so much for earnings.

You should try all things possible with ad placements, colour and units, thats how you find out whats best for your visitors. Or, direct more women to your site, you will not need optimizing in this case, they click everything around! :D

This made me smile, becuase I run 2 sites and, based on site audience gender share, there's no doubt whatsoever that the site which certainly appeals to women more sees much higher CTR month in, month out.
