Yeah, strange that. The one that dropped for me was an old site (was pr6) too.

I received a drop too on a blog I transferred from blogspot to wordpress. It was pr3 now it's 2. I heard that backlinks expire after 6 months - is that true?

You got the whole PR game wrong here.

Google assigns PR not by number of links but by the importance of the links and also number of outbound links on that page.

You might have thousands of backlinks -- but those backlinks do not have much PR.
So you don't get any PR.
A site with a PR9 backlinks -- and only one more outbound link will surely get PR8 and most probably 9. Thats how the PR algo works.

The site owned by your competitor got PR4 because it has --

    1 PR5
    2 PR4 &
    5 PR3 backlinks.

In total it has 30 backlinks.

Most importantly the PR5 site linking to you competitor has only 2 outgoung link on it. So your competitor got all the love.

I'm aware of how PR works and the padding of .15 for each PR exchange. You assumed I have thousands of backlinks but they dont have PR .. when in fact, there are many PR5's , PR4's etc ..coming from those backlinks.

But, I think that site is a perfect example of how content and article submission and time spent in SEO is not the only strategy, because as you can see on that websites backlinks are coming from sites which they built and put the "Powered by: " in the footer. Another strategy in SEO - build free sites for businesses (especially ones you know will get lots of links) and put your link in the footer
