i think it is their deal where if you buy a non domain product or service from them such as hosting then you can your domain for $1.99

This is correct; you have to make a purchase which qualifies for that promotion in order to take advantage of it.

I think they are offering .info for 99 cents without being required to purchase anything else.

their .info is cheap but the others are right about that offer, you have to spend some money on their other products to get that $1.99 deal lol, its their way of making more money

It's not the ICANN fee that makes the downside here. It's the renewal which goes expensive.

There's no downside the way I see it.
You're only gaining the privilege to register a domain at $1.99 by purchasing something you need anyway.

Yap, you must purchase any of their product. For example hosting in order to enjoy the $1.99.

I tried the promo code and and the price of the domain came down to $2.19 while checking out.. It was a .com domain. And the offer is valid for .com/ .net/ .org
But I was not able to complete the order as they require to pay through Credit card. Even if u choose paypal, u cant pay through paypal balance and u will have to add a new credit card. Which I dont have.. :)
    But I think its real..
I found the promo code here- weblogtoolscollection.com/archives/2008/10/23/199-domain-registration-from-go-daddy/

The site seems to be down right now, but its reliable as I found the link from "Wordpress News"

I hope unlike me most of you wud be able to take benefit from it.
