i dont freelancing as i m still learning lots of trick of the business,
but i m working for the future, i m optimizing my site and making lots of contacts in the city i live, i get added by people on gtalk or yahoo, either offering me a job or seeking advice as how to go about things but i have never gone people boasting my skills. The most important thing is social networkin for a SEO

Amen to that :) It's people selling services that they don't actually know how to provide that gives SEOs a bad name.

Thankfully most business owners are now starting to get knowledgeable enough to ask the right questions to weed out the real SEOs from the people that think they are.
I worked on my own sites for 3 years before I even felt remotely confident to work on someone elses.

That doesn't really mean too much at all. I have a site that's 9th for a search term that has 349m results.
How much traffic do the phrases generate?

priyakochin, i agree with the others. You must have a portfolio of your own and work on your own website. I posted on dp a while ago about my seo. He actually has gotten now over 40 sites into the top ten of google for tough keywords but made the huge mistake of signing nda's. Now that he has slowly gotten away from that he has started to build a portfolio( of only 3 sites so far) and has started to get business. Once people can contact others
you will slowly start to build your client base, but seriously dp isnt the best place to get seo work. Try gumtree.com. I am lucky to have stumbled upon a good webdesigner here that i thank god for but most of the times people on dp are looking for bargain basement deals which is good for a beginner seo that is looking to build up his portfolio.
I will try to help out as much as i can in the future as i know how tough it is to break into this field.
