Can anyone please advise me on which free flatform for message boards and forums (like blogger.com is to blogs) to use? One where I can also put Google Adsense?

PHPBB is a free forum software, AdSense can also be inserted within the template.

It's insecure and has very poor skins, it's not even that easy to skin. The default skin is terrible. It also has poor community support compared to phpBB and lacks the polish and features of myBB

phpBB would be better. I had many problems with MyBB. I signed up, never got an activation for the official forums, and when I contacted the admin by e-mail got no answer from them on fixing my account. phpBB has been around for awhile and has many hacks, mods, skins styles etc avalilible for members.

I think MyBB is a great free message board. phpBB seems to have lots of security issues.

BTW if you want to have your board look different from the normal ones, try Vanilla.

Seriously, for your time and the benefit of the community - save up and buy something like vBulletin. Free software may be great in the interim, but when you factor in the growth of your forum, admin time, ease of use and security - it's worth paying up front. If it don't work out, you can always reuse the license at a later stage.

I wasted a lot of time on PHPBB and SMF - and I'd never use them again even for a 'try and see' forum - as I know later down the line there will be a lot of headaches and time wasted and I'd end up porting them over to vB anyway.

SMF isn't that new - I suppose the support is a little worse off than phpBB but overall I like the software a lot better than phpBB; it has a lot more better & useful stock features.

phpBB 3.0 is still in beta & their current 2.xx release isn't really up to par with other available forum software such as SMF so I wouldn't go with phpBB right now.

Yeah, if you can pay go go for IPB or VBulletion. SMF is not better than phpBB or myBB. I'm unsure how you got to this conclusion.

I got to that conclusion from using both for over a year each.... SMF is far superior to phpBB's stock package; however phpBB has a better support community & more mods & people willing to make the mods.

It's a personal opinion on what is better & my opinion is SMF is better.

How did you come to this conclusion? I have found that SMF has one of the best support teams on the net!
