I don't know how the contextual ads work though. Do you get to choose?

    2 types of ads
    1) Remarketing. Depends on what websites visitors visited before and are shown in display ads.
    2) Contextual are shown related to your page content and shown in text ads.

You can select in Adsense or if you use WP plugin, usually you can find this option too. Me and a lot of other publishers get best results when both options is ON.

yes, you can customize a lot with it. For example, I just add adsense publisher ID to it, and customize all ads from plugin.

ok, the post from the last page says the following - There is contextual ads and then there are re-targeting ads. Re-targeting ads serve ads on sites for visitors that recently visited web sites that are enrolled in Google's re-targeting network. Contextual ads serve ads that relate to the content of the page the visitor is on.

Are you saying that if you serve text ads, it shows ads based on what's on your website but if you show picture ads, it shows ads based on where the visitor has been surfing to prior to your website? Is that what you are saying?

    What exactly does that do?

I guess I'm looking for a plugin that you just insert your pub-id and allow the ads to be generated throughout the site rather than having to insert code on every single post or page.

$1k-3k isn't very much, in the grand scheme of things. AdSense has its place, to be sure, but monetizing through other means or simply trying to build your list might very well prove more profitable.

Since nobody decided to further chime in on this answer, I am going to have to presume the advice given in this thread is mostly all wrong. In summary, those who are worrying about keywords on their website to have adsense show certain kinds of ads are wasting their time. Google serves ads based on the users surfing habits and search habits, not your website keywords.

Actually you are wrong as well. Google has 2 types of ads. The first type, contextual, uses keywords off your site to best select the ads to display. The second type, interest based ads, are derived from the user's browsing/search history/habits.
