I made a couple of search engines using the google API, they are specialized.
    JavaScriptSearch.org - finds Javascripts.
CheatSearch.org - finds game cheats - I made it for my son.
CVFox.com- Resume search, finds CV's (resumes) from the web - use the refinement tabs.
Skoolz.org - is a search engine that searches only the sites of US universities and colleges.

You can't compete with Google, but you can make a search niche targeted. I have not made my own though.

I agree, I tried out a few scripts but it's way to resource extensive and the results were not as good as else where.

I've written site search engines in perl with scores given based on title, keyword density, file name, file type etc. I was very proud of it as it was so efficient and written many many years ago as one of my first paid projects. So proud infact I printed off and stuck the source on my wall

As an excersise I did write a little spider to go with it, however I don't think it'd have scaled too well!

i think this is the way to go ahead, unless someone got big $$$ to promote the own search engine to make any profits

speciallising in a niche market would be a good idea with filter options and reviews (but then again it comes to a directory sort of a thing, not a real search engine)

Why would anyone want to better Google? They can't be beaten, they aren't good at anything else, their local search sucks on so many levels, so I'm amazed at why so many talk about toppling them.

Throwing up another Google will not make the web a better place. Like our friend said earlier
Exactly, so why bother taking on Google at all, and with so many other web search options available, Google will struggle to compete with them and will have no choice but to concede much of the web control to others. There are other big major companies with multi-million pound budgets, so they can easily beat Google, Yahoo and MSN in at least 1 topic area, and some like Reed already control 60 to 70 top categories.

Ofcourse Google won't go hungry or anything, but others are just better at certain things than Google. It's just life... Someone is always better.
