Anyone live in Florida?

I was curious to know if the hurricanes are really a big deal there or just blown out of proportion by the media? The reason why I ask is because there are a few places in FL that look like a great place to live but the only negative is the weather. Some people believe that FL will be under water in a few years so that is the only drawback.

The weather is the one thing i love about florida.
Sure, hurricanes can suck, but most of the time thye dont go over the same area. In 96 i went through a real bad one, forgot the name of it (andrew i think?) , and even had a tornado in my back yard  tho i still love florida, and always will.

Yeah because even where I live when I look up info about Nashville it says how there are so many tornadoes and such and the news makes a big deal out of it, however they never hit our residential areas. The tornadoes usually hit wide open areas and trailer parks so that is why I wanted to ask about the hurricanes there since the news makes it seem like they come through and wipe out everything.

Yeah, they do happen, but remember they don't hit the same area every time, they hit over a broad area.
It is a concern, but its just the price to pay to live in the sunshine state.

And the tornado did actually go through and kill quite a few people if I remember correctly, was back in 99.

I live in Jacksonville. Hurricanes are wayyyy blown out of proportion by the media. Sure they can cause a lot of damage, and they aren't to be taken likely, but the media does whatever they can do to create a story. They love disasters.

Jacksonville hasn't seen a hurricane in 50 years. Its the way that the coast line is concaved. Look on a map. Jacksonville doesn't stick out into the ocean.

I also went through 4 hurricanes in 1 season in Gainesville, was out of power for 8 days. I survived just fine.

Thanks a lot. What about Pensacola how is that like? Someone recommended that to me as a good city with low crime.

I was in Pensacola not too long ago, didn't see much of it but its a nice area from what i've heard, though its on the coast and heard from friends it got hit by hurricanes. Again, blown out of proportion by the media.

Get storm insurance, and don't worry, you wont die ;)

Neah...It's all about media, specially 7 news and their "South florida connections" all the time...
When there is a hurricane, it's just a bit windy...that's it...

I have stayed in both Gainesville and Tampa. I survived the hurricane season of 2004 with little damage to home but we did cook on the grill and eat from the cooler for a few days. I haven't seen much here i Tampa. But I think it was much safer in Gainesville since living more toward the interior of the state the damage can be minimized.

So Gainesville is closer to Alabama but still has the warm weather? Is it also a low crime area? I am curious how often do they have tornado warnings where you have to evaculate? Is it a yearly thing? Thanks :)

No, Gainesville is North of Orlando and just about smack dead in the center of Florida off of I-75 enroute to Georgia. If you go west on I-10 off of I-75 then you land in Mobile, Alabama.

Gainesville is pretty much a university town. The UF campus rules the entire city and has the most influence over anything.
