I am not able to open my sliding door because my back porch has been taken over by large hornets. Somehow they get through the screen door so I can't even open the slider to let some breeze in. Ocassionally they even get into the house by squeezing through the tracks on the slider. With two small children, this really scares me. I am alergic and there is a good chance thet they also may be. Does anyone know of a good repellant so I can get me freedom back, or at least my back porch.
We get wasps making nests on our patio too. We bought a product called Vispa that worked very well but we are in Spain so the chances are you wouldn´t find that in your local garden centre. The can was kind of hard to miss as it had bold yellow and black stripes on it.
FTE Gal, I used Ortho Wasp and Hornet killer for the large nest I had in my shed and they were all killed within hours. As long as you know where the nest is all you need to do is wait until evening when they are least active and spray the nest. By morning you should have your porch back
The nearest nest I have found is about 40 feet away but it is not the same kind that are on the porch.
The nest is the key so I would just watch them for a while and try to figure it out. Spraying the wasps will only piss off the ones you don't kill. Are they coming out of the eves of the roof?
The only place I have noticed them going is under the shutters. I don't see how it would be possible to get at them if that is where they are coming from. That is why I was looking for something that would repell them and not something that will wipe out a nest. If it was a nest i think I could take care of them without having to post here. i have heard that garlic is a natural repellant and that i could hang some in the attic and it would keep them away. Anyone else ever heard this?
yfs1 is right, you need to locate the nest or hire an exterminator to do that for you. Once you do that you have many options
My wife works for Canada Post and she gets wasps nests in 3/4 of her delivery boxes. She found a raid that shoots a rocket propelled stream that I swear could cut through a diamond. It is made by 'RAID!' and has been uber effective. It is a blue and black can and says you need to stand 10 to 12 feet away when 'firing'... She recommends it and I don't question her when it comes to wasps...
<what a nightmare> I think you should leave the house and never go back. Hire movers to pack everything up and start looking for a new place to live!
I would consider it fun if I was shooting tin cans off a fence, but when aiming at something that may fight back. Not fun. At least not in my book. Maybe you are the type that likes pain.
Dress well, in green or white, and improvise some type of beekeepers hat. Maybe a motorcycle helmet with pantyhose streched over it? Go after them in the cool of the morning. They are less active, and you will be more likely to hit the actual wasps. Soak the nest, or the suspected location. Just make sure your neighbors know what's up, so they don't call the police. Otherwise, the wasps won't be the only thing attacking... Or hire the next kid that comes through the neighborhood looking for lawnmowing and odd jobs.
If you haven't found the nest yet, or hired someone to find it and lose the wasps, here's a suggestion. We used to do this when camping and the wasps were particularly bad. It actually works. Cut the top of a 3 litre plastic pop bottle about 3 inches from where the curve starts. Turn the top you've just cut off upside down and inside the bottom and leave something sugary and sweet in the bottom of the bottle. (Pop, Juice, sugar water...) They will go inside to get the sugar and then can't get out again. I'd leave a few of these sitting outside on your patio since it sounds like there are so many of them. Good luck...hope you get your wasp dilemma under control soon!
FTEGal, I can relate to this I got stung on the lip by a wasp this weekend! To be honest I would get someone out to look at it, it may cost you more, but atleast you can be safe knowing an expert has got rid of them.
Okay whoever it is .. thanks for the bad rep and calling me a moron lol Jeez I was only giving my opinion. FTEGal, hope you got the wasp situation sorted
