Anyone know much about "retargeting" advertising??

I recently attended a webinar that featured a guest speaker who founded a very successful british site and has gone from a £1000 start up to a £5m plus turnover in 5 years.

He talked about "Retargeting" advertising i.e. when a user clicks on to your site a cookie is delivered on to their PC and then your sites banners carefully follow them around the web. I hit his site and seem to see their banner everywhere which tells me its a great method.

Does anyone have any experience of this type of marketing?? What companies are best (I noticed his company used advertising.com)? How much does this type of advertising cost??

    Thanks in advance!

It would have to be a pop up or pop under ad that appears every now and then.

Think about it...how would you like it if a site did that to you?

I wouldn't like it at all.

That is, IF it really works.

Did he give an example site that does this?

How did you find out about this webinar? Where can we see it?

Well the purpose of "retargeting" is to bring a customer back after they leave your site. It's like a way to remind window shoppers when they are ready to buy. It's a good way not to lose business to the competition.

The site in question is glassesdirect.com once I had visited their site (which is actually a really good resource for glasses) a cookie was delivered to my pc and I have repeatedly seen their ad in different formats on onthebox.com, facebook, msn and many more sites that appear to be on the advertising.com network. Looking at their company a little further I noticed that they appointed an ex director of advertising.com as their head of marketing about 18 months ago. They're ranking high and whatever they're doing it seems to be working.

As for webinars, I'm a member of rachelelnaugh.com (she was the founder of red letter days and an ex dragon from dragons den) she hosts a few webinars each month. They are very helpful and usually feature a notable guest speaker. They don't advertise them on the site, but once your a member you will recieve invites.

    Hope that helps!

Oh, ok, I understand how it works now. Thanks for explaining it further.

Yeah, on second thought, that is a good idea.

Heh, what will they come up with next?

I am an advertiser, and something like that may interest me. If the price is right, I know, it would work.

    Thanks for the info.

Retargeting isn't new, in fact it's been used for several years to successfully bring back the visitors who came to your site but didn't buy. It's so effective that Google just announced that it is offering retargeting for AdWords campaigns. Did you ever end up launching a campaign? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you.

Basically it shows your ad to visitors across the various sites they visit that are part of the network.

For example, when Mike Hill launched CPATsunami? I seriously say it EVERYWHERE. Youtube and many other big name websites, all the same ad. I can't remember what he used though, I'll edit this with the name later if I remember.

Retargeting is very successful and is often used by large name companies and is very much under-utilized IMO. There is very basic example and info about it here: Retargeting

Was it a Mike Hill webinar you watched? Mike is one of the biggest people in re-targeting at the moment (he's helping Google with their re-targeting stuff)

It only appears on sites that use certain ad networks. A lot of the large websites use the same ad networks to fill their space... so you can get ads on all of these sites (e.g. Yahoo, MSN, CNN, etc) by using 1 network.

Retargeting is pretty much a no-brainer for sites who don't convert 1005of their visitors (all websites). For e-tailers with products catalogs Citreo.com is good offering retargeting on a CPC. The only company that I know of that does retargeting (they call it remarketing) on a CPA is Advertise.com. They take on all the risk and only get paid on a CPA which is a win-win.
