You can also post this at the Buy and Sell section of this forum so that you find people who can make this kind of website for you.

Of course it is possible, its been done, sites like play.com and amazon.com have this feature.

I would advise you go and get several professional quotes from people in the business, you should be looking at around $1000-2000 bracket, I advise you against going with a freelancer from an oversea's country. Whilst there are many good oversea's freelancer, and some of them are great developers, there is also quite a few bad eggs, and its much harder to get your money back if that is the case.

Basicaly, post your project brief in detail on www.scriptlance.com and get some quotes in.

Well, its quite a complex site, for most people it is more valuable for them to pay someone, instead of spending a hell of a lot of time learning + implementing.

You can start learning on w3schools.com, but there is a long road ahead for you, you will need to learn (to a very very high degree): xhtml, css, mysql, javascript, and php

Php will be your main focus for this site.

Of course you could go down the road less travelled and try developing one on ruby on rails (twitter is made on it for example) but there are far less resources to help you, and an initial understanding of html and css would be important for this route.

    ---- Edit ----

As for the people above suggesting e-commerce engines. No no and more no, these are for YOU to sell YOUR products, I believe the marketplace feature your looking for is not a reseller script you should purchase, even if such a thing exists.

    Good luck ^^

Your could purchase a script like phpclassifiedsscript.com and modify it to suit your needs. That may be quicker and cheaper than getting a site custom developed. The main issue you will have is handling your payments and fees. You will need a merchant account with a gateway that can be integrated into you site.

PayPal's Website Payments Pro will suit your needs. Regular PayPal may not.

Also, and just my two cents, but you might want to give an idea of the volume of sales that you want to be anticipating, as that'd be a determining factor in the kind of platform investment that you'd need to make (both for the front-end website and for the payment side) ...

welcome - it sounds like overkill to say it, given that everyone's mother/father/teacher etc. has said it since forever, but a little planning now will save you a lot of time, effort and money later. In this particular case, you want to make sure it covers your needs now and future growth, at least for a few years (migrating platforms every time your business expands would very soon become a pain)

Many CMS's out there have extensions that would allow for those kinds of transactions and profits to be handled by php, javascript and databases. I'd recommend Joomla!, as I've found it very easy to use, and very efficient as well.
