I believe a free domain name is better encouragement and more valuable for both parties involved. Promoting a forum that runs under a subdomain to generate a good mount of traffic will make useless the hard work when switching to a domain name from a search engine perspective.

How profitable are forums? I can see a forum becoming huge, but would people actually click on the ads?
In my opinion forums are very profitable because many users come back to check posts on the forum. With good ad placement, and many members I think it can be successful.
