Just curious if anyone is in college for graphics designs.. if yes, how is it?

OR are most of us self-taught here?

What do you mean? There are lots of artists at deviantart who have no schooling and are more amazing than those who do..

    I am practically absolutely self-taught:D
And I really wonder - in the kind presence of so many (video) tutorials and manuals, and tips, whatsoever - who attends courses at all?

Exactly what I was thinking... though there are technical areas that you need teaching for? Such as silk screening and print designs?

I am not from any School..

But looking at some great design contests, I am now getting addicted to designing. And finding some good tutorials or sites to help me learning from A to Z :)

Designing is one thing, (for web, that's easy) but for print you need to know the DPI, CMKY, bleeding area, etc.. which some don't :p

Designing and Creativity are two things - So far its not necessary to aquire knowhow from college or institution. People with good graphical techniques and notion of creativity can do great things. Cheers

Yep, I can't agree more with you, DesignerPro - every great graphic designer needs to have the designer's eye, not only the proper technique.;)

While i agree with most of you about being self taught ( I am self taught myself ) there are certain technical aspects of design that really need an outlined course for you to really master them. Take for example colour theory, there are very few good articles on the internet on this topic, while you can follow your gut instincts and raw talent, there will be times when it would be ideal if you had a sound training in this field ( tight deadlines ) and procedures that you could follow. Anyways that's my 2 cents.

I am self-taught as well. But I think I would take 3D modeling classes if that would be possible here.

I have to agree with this, I learnt basic graphics design in high school and it pretty much was a great foundation to self teach everything else..

    Another question:
If you have been self taught, how do you find jobs? I find that people look more at your portfolio rather than education.. so schooling isn't 100% necessary, though good..

I'v heard going to a graphics college helps for getting jobs but I was also woundering why spend the money if you already know how to do a lot of it? I'm no pro yet but im still 16 and i think by the time i am old enough for college I'll know a lot on designing graphics so why would i want to pay the cash ro go through the same thing over again?

twomark1 200-250 a week? what are you doing to make that? are you just designing web templates?

Graphics design a long is tough... I know I mix it in w/ website design to make more income :)

also, yes that's the politics of everything... I guess some companies rather you have something on paper the proves it ;) even if you know it already.

Hm...I agree here - these employers that really care about quality normally take a closer look at your portfolio without paying much attention on the education and stuff...However, when education + practice + quality meet - to me that sounds the best amalgamation.
