frankcow, I have successfully moved sites from a hostgator account to another server with hostgator but not from other hosts - others with similar experience may post their experiences but I think you should be able to do it. Try emailing their tech support - they are usually prompt and may help you even in moving your sites
HostGator Cpanel does have site backup/restore.. or as 1$ said, they will help you out and do it via SSH if your database is large.
Thanks for the info guys... i think im going to try out hostgator on the basis of everyones collective experiences. Thanks... Ill also use someone affliate link if poss
I use a slew of different hosts to put my sites one. Hostgator being one of them. I have a b2evolution installation (a fork project off the original b2. WordPress is a fork off b2 too. Lots of similarities, and lots of differences.) that is pretty intensive on the mysql server (lots of constant connections). It handles fine and I haven't had a problem. I do highly recommend host gator!
Check out all the hostgator coupons at http://www.hostingcoupons.org/ for discounts before you sign up
Really? That really sucks, my dedicated servers was set up in about 24 hours from the purchase, hate to see that you have negative experience with Hostgator, its a great host in my opinion.
"I'm concerned about the CPU/mySQL usage comment." - I have had lots of problems with hostgator, they kept suspending my account and disabling RSS feeds stating they were using too much resources/cpu. I have now moved to site5 and got more for less money and have had no problems.
I'm actually kind of glad Hostgator does this policing. The site I got booted for probably did not belong on a shared host-- they were right, it should be on a VPS at least. Other hosts might let that slide and the servers slow down for everyone.
I agree too. It is this policy of theirs which helps them offer so much on shared hosting at a reasonable price
I've used them a lot in the last 4 months... I've had many shared hosting accounts (for clients) and 2 dedicateds from them. They helped me move all of my sites (from other hosts and from my other server) to their hosting no questions asked. The reason the dedi server might have taken so long to get up for others is because (I'm pretty sure..) they resell for theplanet.com, which is constantly sold out. The only reason I moved was because none of their 3 server offerings offered enough cpu / ram for my sites. Other then that, I'm a very pleased customer.
I am a new customer of hostgator's baby plan (5GB with unlimited domains).. with a promo coupon I had to pay only 20$ for first 3 months.. thats really cool.. and I too went around for opinions on them.. I think its a really cool one..
I just got dedicated from them, and it goes down once a day. I don't know why, and although they fix it immediately they don't seem to be able to tell me what to do fix it so it doesn't happen again.
Load problem maybe? The only one that I had go down with them was because of the load hitting 100.. They promptly rebooted and I was back in business until the visitors came back..damn you digg, damn you..
