hey, long story short, I'm trying to turn a picture of a cabinet door into a transparent image that I can use to display a color/texture behind.

    Check out the picture...

Transparent image in top right is what I'm looking for... I don't know how this person did this, but I need to mimic it. Converting to grey scale and applying traditional transparency (shown in bottom left at 50%) doesn't work as it merely washes out the color. I need to have things as clear as possible showing just the wood grain and profile. (as shown in the top right picture)

Does anyone know of a simple way to handle this using photoshop or fireworks? I have a few dozen of these doors to create and I'm pretty stumped on how to handle this.

    Thanks alot!

It's made through "layer blending mode".

yeah I was thinking it might have something to do with that... do you think you can explain things a little more?

I just want to make mention here as well that once that transparency is acheive it's going to have to be exported to a png file that will have to retain the transparency...

    thanks

I did.... thing is I'm looking for a solution for exporting... it seems those blend modes only work within photoshop. I'm trying to make a transparent picture that I can use as an overlay and as far as I've seen this isn't helping... :p

Export it as a a png or tiff file to preserve the transparency
