I was interested in becoming a Dmoz editor and was wondering if anybody here was one. Also, do you get paid by Dmoz for doing this or is it just voluntary?
You don't get paid. Shawn (DP admin) is an editor. There seems to be quite a few editors who post in the DMOZ forum.
I doubt if an editor will come up and say that he's an editor @ DMOZ cos of the spam he would get in next hours. who told you Shawn in an editor @ DMOZ?
Where did you get that from? This sort of question has been asked in the DMOZ forum before and a lot of editors responded. A lot of editors post messages in that forum. I not sure, but its common knowledge. He has been for quote some time. Here is his DMOZ profile
why peoples are boring with Dmoz anyway ? moust of trafic come from google DMOZ isnt worth the time spend to get your site indexed there honestly
So what "exactly" do you do as an editor. I'm guessing that you just approve listings for a particular category but I could be wrong. If that is true, then why does it take so long to get into Dmoz?
The editors job is to build a category of useful resources. The submitted sites is the worse source and some editors just ignore them, so the whole concept of "why does it take so long to get into DMOZ" is really not a concept based on reality as DMOZ is not a service for webmasters and is only asked by those not familiar with DMOZ. Editors are also involved in internal discussions on taxonmy, etc; they check current listings for suitability etc. When I was an editor, "approving listings" was something I very rarely did. I did, however, losts 1000's of sites I went out to find and list to build caetgories of useful resources.
As long as it meets the guidelines for a listing and the title and description is guideline complaint; and its listed internally in your declaration of sites you are associated with. If its the sites in your signature you are asking about, then both are probably not listable.
Insufficent content. When they have a few 1000 more listings they might approach being considered for a listing. The "bar" for directory type sites to have sufficient unique content for a listing is set high.
Take a look at the first website that's listed here. Does that looks like a useful website to you? The "main" purpose of that website is for affiliate marketing and adsense. http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Relationships/Dating/Directories/
The standards for a directory site to be listed is now much higher than in the past. That site was probably listed when the standards were lower. It will be eventually be re-reviewed and compared to the current guidelines and a decision made.
My dating directory is just as useful as ALL of those sites if not better. At least I don't try to sneak in affiliate links in my main listings.
You can argue that as much as you like; I am not the one you need to convince....the "bar" for a directory site to be listed is much higher than in the past....thats just the way it is and I not privy to the internal DMOZ discussions on this.
Being an Editor of a popular directory or moderator of a popular forum is not an easy job. It's tough, time consuming. If you want to become an editor for the sake of including just your URLs, I doubt if you'll stick on for long. I'm not an editor over there. Is there any advantage volunteering DMOZ other than possibly including your sites in the list ?? /G
If the editor is not named in a category, then the editor is named in a higher category (any editor in a higher category can edit in the lower category, so some lower or deeper cats may have had multiple editors)...then there are >200 editalls who can and do edit anywhere
